Peyton Randolph letter to Maria Randolph, 1807 July 12

p1

Smithfield July 12,th 1807.

My dearest Wife

I have not had an opportunity before
this, to give you any information about my-
self; and I was very greatly disappointed in
not hearing from you. I will not however
allow myself to ascribe it to any other cause
than the difficulty of knowing where I should
be on any particular day. I place great confidence
in your declaration that you are "worthy of
being the wife of a soldier." Indeed, if you would
duly appreciate the nature of my present un-
dertaking, you would feel no other concern
than for my absence. My health is perfectly
good. We have today marched 20 miles, of
which I only walked rode six; and I am less
fatigued at this time than I have often been
after a little turn on the banks of the canal.
I am in company with Robertson, Leigh, and
many others, whose society beguiles the tedium
of the way. My quarters here are truly luxurious p2 Smithfield is a beautiful & healthy village
and the inhabitants are the most hospitable
in the world. I am now preparing to visit
M.r Todd, and must curtail my letter for
that purpose. Adieu my dearest love.
write to me constantly: Tell me how
you are and our darling little hope. My
heart is always with you.

Once more
adieu my beloved.
Yors
